Talented Writer Convinced the Other Williamsburg is Hip Too
by Tryna Fitzpatrick
Brooklyn, New York’s ultra-cool Williamsburg enclave is known for its music, art, fashion, and food. So, when Tryna Fitzpatrick, a writer, digital storyteller, and TV commercial copywriter, mentions that she lived in Williamsburg, people are impressed. “No, not THAT Williamsburg,” she replies. “The other one. The one with all the muskets.”
Williamsburg, VA, might not be as exciting as Williamsburg, NY, but it is hip in its own way. Where it lacks coffee shops and yoga studios, it makes up for with being the epicenter of the American Revolution. Brooklyn might have trilby hats, but Colonial Williamsburg has 18th-century tricorns.
This all made for an interesting place to have a career as a copywriter.
Along with Colonial Williamsburg and the Jamestown Settlement, Virginia’s Williamsburg is also home to some impressive employers. Busch Gardens, Anheuser Busch, the College of William & Mary, and Kingsmill, the state’s only AAA 4 Diamond Condominium Resort, are all located in the area –– just to name a few. Fitzpatrick took advantage of her niche in the content development field to become a sought-after writer, copywriter, and content manager. “I’ve worked for the biggest names in Williamsburg,” Fitzpatrick said. “And in Williamsburg, that’s a big deal.”
National Brand Marketing Copywriter
As a copywriter with the Williamsburg-based national headquarters of Lumber Liquidators, she was able to produce content for the HGTV Dream Home show, NPR, the Jim Rome Radio Show, and her ad copy has appeared in the New York Times. She even had the opportunity to work with Vanilla Ice and Ty Pennington. “Brooklyn might have Sarah Jessica Parker, but we had the ‘ice, ice, baby’ guy… right here in Williamsburg, Virginia,” she said.
Academic Marketing Content Writer and Manager
Fitzpatrick also worked as the Editorial and Content Manager for the College of William and Mary. Her work primarily focused on writing news stories and human-interest pieces for the college community while managing and mentoring a team of student writers. “William and Mary has a 300-year history of success, and being responsible for that message was an honor,” she said. “How many writers can say that they performed a job once associated with Thomas Jefferson? That’s automatic hipster status right there.”
She then began to sing “Thomas Jefferson’s coming home…” from the Hamilton musical.
20+ Years of Experience
Fitzpatrick recently moved to Wilmington, North Carolina, and is pursuing remote opportunities that offer a platform for her content marketing mojo. “I’m all about telling the stories that count—especially the ones that resonate with me. But I’m also a marketer. That means I can write compelling content that drives traffic, leads, and sales,” she quips, her fingers snap-dancing like the opening act from West Side Story.
Fitzpatrick has a degree in Information Science and Communications from Florida State University. Her freelance editorial work has appeared in a variety of magazines and publications, including Williamsburg’s Next Door Neighbors publication and The Local Scoop lifestyle magazine.
“Still don’t think I’m Brooklyn-New-York cool? My work with healthy lifestyles K-5 programming was once featured on First Lady Michelle Obama’s official Let’s Move website. I’m basically famous,” she says.
“Bam!” she adds while pretending to drop a microphone.
“Plus, I know Generative AI platforms and prompt engineering, WordPress, Office365, Figma, Jira, PageProof, and I’m UX Writing certified. That pretty much makes me one of the coolest people in the Historical Triangle,” she said.
When asked her thoughts on moving to Wilmington, she leaned back in her chair and waved her hand dismissively. “No matter where I roam, I’m the ultimate brand-booster hipster, spinning yarns that captivate and motivate. Plus, with my strong pun and idiom game, working in the coastal Carolinas will be a breeze.”
